Nigerian student drown in Girne beach


The Nigerian student community in Cyprus has been thrown into mourning following the loss of a Nigerian student Hassan Babatunde who reportedly drowned at the Alagadi beach in Girne on Wednesday afternoon.

Hassan Babatunde, 24 went for a deep at the Alagadi-2 region beach at about 3:30pm with some friends when the unfortunate incident happened. He is said to have lost balance due to a heavy sea wave, choking in the process while he was about 15 meters away from the sea shore.

His friends quickly intervened and rescued him and was taken to a Girne hospital in an ambulance but despite medical intervention made at the Girne Dr Akçiçek Hospital, Hassan gave up at about 5:00pm.

Police are currently investigating the incident.

Hassan was a student at the Near East University and had just transferred to the Cyprus International University. He is said to have concluded his registration with the university before the unfortunate incident happened.
