Borussia Monchengladbach have announced the death of Jordi Bongard after he was killed in a fatal traffic accident on Wednesday night.
Bongard, 20, had worked his way up to Borussia's Under-23 side over the past nine years after first joining their academy at the age of 12.
On Thursday February 24, the German club confirmed their young centre-back tragically lost his life after being involved in a traffic accident the previous evening.
Alongside a photo of Bongard, Borussia wrote on Twitter: 'Borussia mourns Jordi Bongard. Our U23 player died in a traffic accident last night.
'We express our deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones and wish them strength. Jordi will always be in our thoughts & hearts!'
Following the tragic news of Bongard's passing, Borussia have cancelled all training sessions and press conferences that were due to be held on Thursday.
Sporting director Roland Virkus also said: 'We received this terrible news this morning and we are stunned. Our deepest sympathy and our thoughts are with Jordi's family.'
Bongard, who scored nine goals in 74 appearances for Borussia's Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 sides, was rewarded with his first professional contract in July of last year.
